Anxiety Disorders: 5 Major Types

Anxiety is a normal biological reaction that we frequently experience in our day-to-day lives. However, if the anxiety symptoms become too excessive and start interfering with your daily life, you might have an anxiety disorder.

Anxiety disorder is highly prevalent among U.S. adults. Statistics show that roughly 31.1% of adults in the States experience anxiety disorders at some point in their lives.

Let’s look at some major types of anxiety disorders.

1. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is marked by excessive worry and overthinking. If you have GAD, you spend a lot of time thinking about events that may impact you in the future and how you should go about them.

2. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

A person with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder experiences difficulty in controlling their thoughts. They may show obsessive and repetitive behavior, such as keeping things in order, counting things, or repeatedly washing their hands.

3. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

A person might develop a Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder if they were exposed to a traumatic experience at some point in their life. If you have PTSD, you may experience difficulty sleeping, bad dreams, flashbacks, scary thoughts, and anger for no reason.

4. Social Phobia

A person with Social Phobia, or Social Anxiety Disorder, experiences excessive anxiety and self-consciousness in daily social settings. If you have Social Phobia, you may find it hard to talk to people and find it overwhelming to socialize with larger groups. Some other common phobias include:

  • Claustrophobia: fear of congested spaces
  • Acrophobia: fear of heights
  • Hemophobia: fear of blood
  • Aerophobia: fear of flying

5. Separation Anxiety Disorder

A Separation Anxiety Disorder is marked by excessive fear about losing a loved one. This disorder is more prevalent among young children and can potentially impair development.
