Fear in the Subconscious – What to Do about It

From fear of heights to fear of embarrassment, we have all got our fears. However, some people are better at handling it than others.

While our conscious mind makes us aware of the happenings in our surroundings and processes information at the present moment, our subconscious mind is operating silently behind the scenes.

From childhood experiences to past memories, a lot is being processed below the level of conscious awareness. Since we are not mindful of these happenings, our emotions can be quite irrational.

Our fears also reside in the subconscious mind. It is only by getting some handle on our subconscious mind that we can hope to get rid of them. Here are some ways you can do that:

Be Honest

Many of us are quite insecure about our fears. We might not want to admit to ourselves that something scares us and that we need to do something about it.

The first step is to acknowledge that there is a problem. It would require tapping into the subconscious and finding out reasons of fear.

Break the Fear Cycle

Fear is a pattern that your subconscious mind has learnt. It could be through a series of negative events or traumatic experiences.

Whenever you are facing the fearful situation, the same emotions stir up and the process gets reinforced through repetition.

Your goal is to break that cycle. You need to be fully aware of the negative feelings and try to replace them with positive ones.

Face Your Fears

Facing your fears is a subject that Susan Jeffers has covered extensively in her book, Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway.

The idea is to face your fear head on. Once you do this repeatedly, the subconscious mind will learn ‘not to fear’ the particular stimulus.

Whether it is meeting strangers or skydiving, doing the feared activity will turn your thoughts and feelings back into your favor.

Employ Self-Hypnosis

Hypnosis is an ancient technique that helps you communicate with your subconscious mind and change its patterns for the better.

Self-hypnosis contains a series of relaxing, imaginative and self-suggestion techniques. It might take some time, but once you master self-hypnosis, you can get rid of all your fears and anxieties.

You might also want to employ professional services of a hypnotist. A trained and experienced expert will not only help you overcome fears in the subconscious, they will also counsel you towards overall wellbeing.

  2. If you can shift your mind and use your subconscious more, amazing things start to happen.
I wish younger people like teenagers can use this practice more.
    Thanks for the great read!
