What Type of Phobias Can Hypnosis Help With?

The fear of heights. The fear of water. The fear of spiders. The fear of confinement. The fear of being abandoned.

There are hundreds of phobias. And while we all have something we’re scared of, for people with specific phobias, their fears can trigger panic and anxiety attacks.

While there are different treatments available for different phobias, researchers are studying the effects and effectiveness of hypnosis for certain types of fears.

But what have they found out about the types of phobias that can be treated with hypnosis? Let’s take a look:

The Fear of Driving

For some people, being in the passenger seat is a terrifying experience. For others, it’s being in the driver’s seat that triggers their anxiety. It’s understandable because losing control of the car is a horrifying thought.

Studies show that patients who had an extreme fear of driving—especially on the I-95 interstate— were able to resume driving after going through hypnosis sessions.

The Fear of Puking

It’s understandable that nobody likes throwing up and nobody wants to watch other people vomit. But when you actively avoid flying or using the bus late at night, in case somebody has motion sickness, it can affect everyday life.

There have been countless news reports of people trying hypnosis to tackle their fear of vomiting.

Claustrophobia

Hypnosis also works for people with claustrophobia. People with a fear of being trapped in small spaces find it difficult to breathe and often end up having panic attacks if they’re inside a small room. People with this phobia also have trouble using an elevator and will go out of their way to avoid using one.

For example, they’ll be willing to use the stairs to go to the 17th floor instead of using an elevator.

Hypnosis helps by exposing patients to what causes their anxiety. It taps into their subconscious to figure out the root cause of the problem. This allows professionals to restructure the thought patterns of their patients and encourage them to think positively.

In one study, it was reported that hypnosis successfully helped patients undergoing an MRI feel less claustrophobic and anxious.
