How To Stop Being Self-Consciousness

Everyone gets self-conscious and awkward about different things about themselves. Adolescents, adults, men, women–everyone feels self-conscious and awkward, which can affect their self-esteem.

You’re definitely not alone in feeling that way and struggling to be confident, whether your self-consciousness stems from insecurity about physical features like weight, height, skin, or hair or more internal challenges.

Regardless of what the cause or reason for these feelings is, here are some helpful tips to help you cope with them:

Reframe your thoughts and negative self-talk

One of the biggest enemies of self-esteem is negative self-talk. Telling yourself that you’re fat, ugly, unlovable, annoying, stupid, boring, or any other descriptor that you associate with negative feelings or criticism can really hurt you. Often these words and feelings come to us from external sources, but we tend to internalize them and use them as weapons against ourselves, leading to feelings of self-consciousness.

Focus on your most positive qualities and features

Learn to reframe your thoughts and focus on your positive qualities and features. Really engage with what makes you special and unique, such as your generosity, your loving nature, your smile, the way your eyes light up, etc., and see how it impacts you. You’ll find yourself experiencing more confidence in place of self-consciousness and disappointment.

Remind yourself that others do not view you this critically

One secret to beating self-consciousness is to realize that you are your own worst critic. While it’s easy to assume that everyone in the world is judging you and noticing the things you’re conscious about, the truth is radically different. Yes, there’s no dismissing and invalidating when people make you feel bad, but the vast majority of people around you are happy to be around you and love you the way you are. Not everyone is noticing those arbitrary features you’re worried about or picking up on behaviors that you dislike. It’s your self-belief telling you that.

Additionally, stop comparing yourself to the people around you. They’re where they need to be, and you’re where you need to be. Comparison is a thief of joy, and you deserve better than that.
