Why Expressing Emotions Regularly Is Healthy for You

Human beings experience a range of emotions. From being cheerful, excited, and elated, to experiencing anger, fear, and despair; we feel all kinds of emotions. In fact, a study has shown that the range of our feelings impacts our health as well.

However, while we all experience a vast number of emotions on a regular basis, a lot of us have trouble expressing them. You may shy away from sharing your feelings and thoughts or find it a particularly challenging task. This can result in you bottling up your feelings—both positive and negative ones—which then causes its own share of problems.

Here is why you should get into the habit of expressing your emotions frequently and candidly.

It Helps You Be More Self Aware

You know what can help you in your struggle to achieve a greater self-awareness? Expressing your emotions!  Here’s how it works:

When you give words to your emotions, you reinforce what you’re feeling. Saying it aloud doesn’t just help you get better clarity of your emotions, but also enables the listener to share their perspective on what you’ve said. Thus, as you both reflect upon what you’ve said, you’re able to be more aware of what, why, and how you feel things.

It Helps Alleviate Your Anxiety

We know. Voicing out how you’re feeling can be an anxiety-ridden task for a lot of us. This is especially the case for people who experience social anxiety or have a phobia of expressing their feelings. It’s even more nerve-wracking having to admit how you feel to someone who makes you nervous or is difficult to talk to.

However, by expressing your emotions, you’re taking an additional step toward conquering your fear. By speaking your mind and fully expressing yourself, you’re able to communicate your feelings across. The more often you do this, the less anxious you’ll be about what the other person may think. This will help keep your anxiety at bay while also giving you the self-confidence needed to express yourself.

It Strengthens Your Relationships

You’ll be doing your relationships—and yourself—a huge favor by expressing your emotions freely. Whether its positive emotions you wish to express or negative ones, it’s better to have your loved ones know how you feel instead of them having to second-guess. It’s also a whole lot better than them being completely oblivious to your feelings.

By articulating your feelings, you play your part in fostering healthier relationships. Isn’t telling someone you’re mad at them more effective than giving them the cold shoulder?  Similarly, don’t hold back on telling someone you care for them and expressing gratitude. The more honest you are in your relationships, the stronger your bond will be.
