What Causes You to Sleepwalk? 5 Triggers of Somnambulism

An estimated 3.6% of the American population displays behavior conducive to somnambulism or sleepwalking. As a behavior disorder, sleepwalking ischaracterized by walking around and engaging in detailed activities while mostly asleep and affects kids more than adults.

In today’s blog, we shall discuss the causes that may lead to sleepwalking attitudes.

1. Fever

Some children or adults may display sleepwalking behavior when they catch a fever. While night terrors are more common during these instances, the possibility of sleepwalking cannot be discounted for someone with a history.

Watch out for any blank looks or listless expressions during such times to limit the movement to a single room.

2. Subconscious Anxiety

Anxiety and stress are known causes of sleep deprivation, which, in turn, is a direct cause of sleepwalking. Your chances of nocturnal sleepwalking are exponentially increased when you come across something stressful earlier in the day.

Destressing through exercise, meditation, breathing exercises, and caffeine control may lead to a full night’s rest for someone displaying stress-related sleepwalking.

3. Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that goes undiagnosed in many people due to most of its symptoms—snoring, gasping due to air obstruction, and pauses in breathing—occur during sleeping hours.

However, additional signs like daytime exhaustion, hypertension, and sleepwalking may very well lead to a formal diagnosis of the breathing disorder.

Speaking of breathing disorders, asthma and its medication are also linked to sleepwalking behavior in children.

4. Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive nerve disorder that starts with tremors and slowly restricts a person’s ability to move. Ironically, the condition’s paralyzing properties may contribute to this parasomnia.

Usually, when you sleep, your brain paralyzes certain muscles so that you don’t move around and hurt yourself or others. However, the presence of Parkinson’s disease may not let this paralysis take over your movements completely, leading to just movement retention to make you sleepwalk.

5. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) can happen due to many reasons such as:

  • Working long hours.
  • Taking certain medicines.
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Mental health issues.
  • Infections
  • Family history
  • Disorders, like Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Any of the above reasons may lead to long-term fatigue that may turn into CFS, ultimately leading to sleep disorders including, but not limited to, sleepwalking, sleep talking, insomnia, and so on.
